SMEER Clear Coat – Clear Protective Coating
Keep the Look. Add the Protection.
SMEER Clear Coat is a water-based, acrylic-based transparent film coating designed to protect and enhance a wide range of interior decorative surfaces while retaining their original colour, texture and appearance.
Clear Coat applies with a milky/whitish appearance when wet and dries completely clear, leaving behind a durable protective film with a clean semi-gloss finish.
Unlike a penetrating sealer, SMEER Clear Coat is specifically designed to form a protective film over the surface. This makes it ideal for decorative and architectural applications where the original appearance of the substrate needs to remain visible while gaining an additional layer of protection.
Acrylic-Based Transparent Film Coating — not a polyurethane or silicone coating.
Why Choose SMEER Clear Coat?
Sometimes you don’t want to paint over a beautiful surface — you simply want to protect what is already there.
SMEER Clear Coat provides a transparent protective layer while allowing the original colour, texture and character of the underlying material to remain visible.
Its semi-gloss finish can also slightly enrich the appearance of materials such as concrete, brick and natural stone, creating a cleaner and more finished appearance.
Key Benefits
✓ Dries Clear
Applies milky/whitish and becomes transparent as it dries.
✓ Hard Finish
Forms a protective acrylic film over the coated surface.
✓ Semi-Gloss Finish
Provides a subtle, clean sheen without creating an excessively glossy appearance.
✓ Multi-Surface
Suitable for a broad range of compatible architectural and decorative surfaces.
✓ Water-Based Acrylic
A practical water-based acrylic coating system.
✓ Eco-Friendly & Non-Toxic
Designed as a user-friendly water-based coating.
✓ Brush or Roller Application
Simple application without specialised equipment.
✓ Retains the Original Look

Suitable Surfaces
SMEER Clear Coat can be applied to properly prepared and compatible:
CONCRETE | BRICK | STONE | METAL | TILE | PAINTED SURFACES
Typical applications include:
- Interior decorative concrete
- Concrete counters and decorative features where appropriate
- Face brick
- Natural and decorative stone
- Window sills
- Decorative masonry
- Feature walls and cladding
- Suitable wall tiles and tiled surfaces
- Suitable metal surfaces
- Compatible previously painted surfaces
- Architectural and decorative features
Previously painted, sealed, extremely smooth or non-porous surfaces should always be tested for adhesion before coating the entire area.
Interior Clear Protection
SMEER Clear Coat is positioned primarily as an interior clear protective coating.
It is particularly suited to decorative architectural surfaces where the appearance of the original material forms part of the design.
Examples include a natural stone feature wall, exposed face brick, decorative concrete, timber-style architectural features where compatible, tiled surfaces, window sills and other areas where an opaque paint would hide the character of the substrate.
The product is intended for non-ponding applications.
Surface Preparation
Correct surface preparation is essential for achieving a good clear finish.
Because the coating dries transparent, dirt, contamination and imperfections underneath the coating can remain visible after application.
The surface must therefore be:
- Clean
- Sound
- Completely dry
- Free from dust
- Free from grease and oil
- Free from wax
- Free from loose or flaking material
- Free from contaminants that may interfere with adhesion
Remove loose or poorly adhered existing coatings before application.
Repair cracks and damaged areas where necessary and allow all repairs to dry or cure sufficiently before applying Clear Coat.
New cementitious surfaces must be adequately cured and dry before coating.
For previously painted, sealed, polished, smooth or non-porous surfaces, apply a small test area first to confirm adhesion and compatibility.
Always Test First
Clear coatings can change the perceived depth, colour and sheen of certain surfaces.
Porous materials such as concrete, stone and brick may appear slightly darker or richer once coated.
Always apply a small test patch in an inconspicuous area and allow it to dry completely before proceeding with the full application.
Application & Coverage
Application Method
BRUSH OR ROLLER
Coverage on Porous/Rough Surfaces | Approx 4sqm per litre per coat
Coverage on Smooth/Non-Porous Surfaces | Approx 8-10sqm per lite per coat
Stir the product thoroughly before application.
Apply an even coat using a good-quality brush or suitable roller.
Work systematically and maintain a wet edge wherever possible to minimise visible lap marks.
Avoid excessive product build-up, pooling and overworking the coating.
For the best overall appearance and more consistent film formation, two coats are recommended, depending on the condition and porosity of the substrate.
Allow the first coat to dry sufficiently before applying the second coat.
Spraying
Conventional spray application is not part of the recommended consumer application method for SMEER Clear Coat.
Due to the viscosity and film-forming nature of the product, SMEER Clear Coat should be marketed and applied using a:
Brush or Roller
Drying & Curing Times
Under normal conditions at approximately 25°C, with adequate ventilation and moderate humidity:
| Stage | Approximate Time |
|---|---|
| Touch Dry | ± 1 Hour |
| Recoat | 4–6 Hours |
| Light Handling / Use | ± 12 Hours |
| Full Cure | 24 Hours |
Drying times may vary depending on environmental and application conditions.
Cool temperatures, high humidity, poor airflow, heavier film thickness and less porous surfaces may increase drying times.
Avoid washing, scrubbing, covering or exposing the freshly coated surface to unnecessary moisture until the coating has fully cured.
Final Appearance
Colour: Clear / Transparent
Finish: Semi-Gloss
SMEER Clear Coat has a milky or whitish appearance during application. This is normal.
As the water evaporates and the coating dries, the film becomes transparent, revealing the original surface underneath.
Once dry, the coating leaves a clean protective film with a subtle semi-gloss appearance.
The exact final appearance will depend on the colour, texture and porosity of the substrate.
Cleaning of Equipment
Clean brushes, rollers, trays and other application equipment with clean water immediately after use.
Do not allow the product to dry completely on application equipment before cleaning.
Important Limitations
SMEER Clear Coat is an acrylic-based transparent protective film coating.
It is not a polyurethane (PU), epoxy or silicone coating system and should not be represented as one.
The product is not intended or marketed as:
- A heavy-duty industrial floor coating
- A polyurethane replacement
- A high-traffic flooring system
- A vehicle-traffic coating
- A heavy industrial abrasion-resistant system
- A permanent waterproofing membrane
- A ponding-water coating
- A submerged waterproofing system
Clear Coat should be used for non-ponding applications.
Do not use the product on permanently submerged surfaces or in areas subject to continuous standing water.
Performance on metal, tiles, previously painted surfaces and other smooth or low-porosity substrates depends heavily on the condition and compatibility of the underlying surface.
Always perform a test patch where compatibility or adhesion is uncertain.
